Marbled monitor lizard rescued, released into wild in Batanes

SANTA ANA, Cagayan — A marbled monitor lizard found inside a resident’s stockroom in Basco, Batanes, was rescued and returned to its natural habitat on Thursday, Nov. 5.

The resident voluntarily surrendered the reptile to the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in Batanes to ensure its safe handling.

The lizard, scientifically known as Varanus marmoratus, measured about 120 centimeters long and weighed around 20 kilograms. Initial assessment found it in good condition, with no visible injuries.

It was later released into a mountainous area in Chadpidan, Basco.

PENRO chief Victoria Baliuag praised the resident for promptly turning over the animal, saying the act reflected the positive impact of the agency’s information, education and communication campaign on wildlife conservation.

She said the campaign aims to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting wildlife. /dp
