The redevelopment of Session Road in Baguio City is set to begin in 2027, with plans to improve drainage and sewer systems, enhance traffic management, and add more greenery along the road, the city government said.

According to the Baguio City Information Office’s social media post, the redevelopment project is being revived with a P150-million fund from the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), after it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During that time, the previous P120-million fund was used for emergency and medical needs.

The city has finalized the drainage and sewer components of the project, with loading and unloading bays and bio-retention areas, which will absorb and manage rainwater underground.

This will help replenish groundwater, while planters and green spaces will help maintain greenery and address climate change.

Meanwhile, the widening of sidewalks along Session Road was based on the suggestions and recommendations of various colleges and schools in Baguio during previous stakeholder engagements, as consolidated by the City Planning, Development and Sustainability Office (CPDSO).

City engineer Richard Lardizabal said roads will not be fully closed, as construction may be done by sections to keep traffic flowing.

The city government will also conduct further coordination with concerned agencies, the tourism sector, business establishments, and other stakeholders to review the traffic scheme and address concerns that may arise during construction.

Lardizabal said the redevelopment is part of the city’s efforts to address long-term urban concerns and prevent urban decay as Baguio continues to develop toward 2043. —Mariel Celine Serquiña/KG, GMA News
