Headstones belonging to IDF soldiers who were kidnapped prior to their death can now indicate the abduction and its date, the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee announced earlier this week.

The committee, chaired by MK Boaz Bismuth, approved the new legislation as an amendment to the Military Cemeteries Regulations governing permitted inscriptions on IDF headstones.

The change in regulations was requested by bereaved families whose loved ones were abducted during their IDF service and killed while in captivity.

Defense Minister Israel Katz emphasized the urgency of approving the new regulations prior to the annual memorial service marking the events of October 7, noting the families' desire to have the abduction detail inscribed on the headstones.

Defense Ministry: 1,318 security force members killed since October 7

The new legislation follows a Defense Ministry announcement on Sunday that 1,318 members of Israel's security forces have been killed across all conflict fronts since October 7, 2023.

The figure, announced by the ministry's Families, Commemoration, and Heritage Department, includes IDF soldiers, Israel Police officers, Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) and Fire and Rescue Authority personnel, security coordinators, and local response team members.
