Traffic policeman injured after car rams him during road closure

TUMPAT: A traffic policeman was injured after being hit by a car while controlling traffic at the Kampung Kepulau traffic light intersection in Palekbang yesterday.

Tumpat district police chief ACP Mohd Khairi Shafie said the 22-year-old policeman from the Tumpat Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPTD) was closing the road from Morak to Palekbang at about 1.25pm.

He said the road closure was to facilitate the passage of Sultan Muhammad V's entourage for Friday prayers and Majlis Jamuan Rakyat held in conjunction with the Sultan's 57th birthday.

"A Proton Saga driven by a 55-year-old woman from Morak is believed to have failed to notice the presence of the policeman before hitting him.

"The policeman fell and suffered minor injuries.

"He was taken to Tumpat Hospital for outpatient treatment, while the car driver was uninjured," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Khairi said the case was being investigated under Section 79(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

He said investigations were ongoing, including efforts to obtain dashcam footage or other recordings that could assist the investigation.

"We advise all road users to comply with instructions from policemen carrying out traffic control duties and pay full attention to road conditions, especially during special operations and traffic control, to prevent unwanted incidents," he said.
