RI pushes transparency in cross-border copyright royalty governance

Badung, Bali (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government called for more transparent cross-border copyright royalty governance during the Global Dialogue on Cross-Border Copyright Royalty Governance in the Digital Era in Badung District, Bali, on Wednesday.

Indonesian Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas said Indonesia is pushing for a set of rules and a shared system so that rapidly flowing cross-border copyright royalties can be recorded, calculated, and distributed with better transparency, accountability, and fairness.

"When works can be enjoyed across different countries through digital platforms, royalty governance must keep pace with these developments. Transparency, accountability, and interconnected systems are vital to protecting creators' economic rights," Supratman said in his speech at the forum.

He noted that cross-border royalty issues involve more than just copyright laws—they also require inter-agency coordination and interconnected information systems.

Therefore, he added, Indonesia is pushing for international dialogue to bring together the experiences and practices of various countries without ignoring their respective national legal frameworks.

Through the Bali forum, held from October 7 to 9, Indonesia is bringing together delegates from 35 countries, international organizations, collective management organizations, creators, industry players, and experts to discuss cross-border copyright royalty governance in the digital era.

Minister Supratman stated that the forum serves as a space to build a shared understanding and explore practical cooperation.

"The goal is to ensure creators and rights holders receive fairer economic benefits from the use of their works in the digital space," he said.

The dialogue addresses three key issues: transparency, accountability, and system interoperability.

Transparency relates to the information received by rights holders; accountability concerns responsibility at every stage of royalty management, while interoperability focuses on the ability of various systems to exchange information reliably.
