Five insane stats from a remarkable Betway Premiership weekend

Translate

Mamelodi Sundowns continued their remarkable scoring run, AmaZulu made a flying start under Arthur Zwane, and Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou reached a significant milestone during another eventful weekend of Betway Premiership action.

Newly promoted Milford FC also continued to impress, collecting points at a rate that puts them among the best-performing newcomers in PSL history.

Here are five numbers that tell the story of the weekend.

1. AmaZulu reach 20 points faster than ever before

20 points in nine matches – Arthur Zwane has made the fastest start by an AmaZulu coach in PSL history.

Usuthu’s impressive opening to the 2026/27 campaign has seen them collect 20 points from their first nine matches.

It is a new benchmark for the club, surpassing Zwane’s own previous record of reaching the same points total in 12 matches during the 2025/26 season.

The previous joint record was 14 matches, achieved by Clive Barker in 2008/09 and Craig Rosslee in 2013/14.

Zwane’s latest achievement underlines the progress AmaZulu have made under his leadership and gives the Durban side an encouraging platform for the remainder of the campaign.

Fastest AmaZulu coaches to 20 points:

  • 9 matches – Arthur Zwane (2026/27)
  • 12 matches – Arthur Zwane (2025/26)
  • 14 matches – Clive Barker (2008/09)
  • 14 matches – Craig Rosslee (2013/14)

2. Sundowns are scoring at a record-breaking pace

27 goals in 10 matches – Mamelodi Sundowns have registered the highest goal tally by any team after 10 games in PSL history.

The defending champions have started the 2026/27 league campaign with an extraordinary attacking return.

Their 27 goals put them ahead of the previous benchmark of 26, achieved by Kaizer Chiefs in 1996/97 and Mamelodi Sundowns themselves in 1999/00.

The statistic highlights the attacking firepower available to Masandawana and the difficulty opponents have faced in containing them.

Most league goals after 10 matches in PSL history:

  • 27 – Mamelodi Sundowns (2026/27)
  • 26 – Kaizer Chiefs (1996/97)
  • 26 – Mamelodi Sundowns (1999/00)

35 matches unbeaten – Mamelodi Sundowns have now gone 35 consecutive league matches without defeat at home.

Since May 2024, the Brazilians have won 32 and drawn three of their 35 home league fixtures.

Their broader home record is even more impressive. Since August 2022, Mamelodi Sundowns have played 64 home league matches, winning 55, drawing eight and losing just once.

That solitary defeat came against Cape Town City in May 2024.

The numbers underline the challenge facing teams travelling to face Mamelodi Sundowns, who have made home advantage a significant part of their domestic dominance.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ home league record since August 2022:

  • Played: 64
  • Won: 55
  • Drawn: 8
  • Lost: 1

4. Ouaddou celebrates 50th win in South Africa

50 victories – Abdeslam Ouaddou reached a major coaching milestone with the victory over Kaizer Chiefs.

The Orlando Pirates coach has now recorded 50 wins in all competitions for PSL clubs.

His record includes his time in charge of both Orlando Pirates and Marumo Gallants, with the majority of those victories coming at the Soweto giants.

At Orlando Pirates, Ouaddou has recorded 46 wins in 62 matches, alongside 11 draws and five defeats. His earlier spell at Marumo Gallants produced four wins in 13 matches.

Across both clubs, his South African record stands at 75 matches, 50 wins, 17 draws and eight defeats.

5. Milford FC make an impressive top-flight start

18 points from 10 matches – Milford FC are enjoying one of the strongest starts by a newly promoted side in PSL history.

The newcomers have quickly adapted to life in the top flight, collecting 18 points from their opening 10 league matches.

That total places them joint third on the historical list, alongside Free State Stars in 2007/08 and Richards Bay in 2022/23.

Only Swallows FC, with 22 points in 2020/21, and Bidvest Wits, with 19 points in 2006/07, have managed better starts among the teams listed.
