Spider-Man 5's Release Timeline Means It'll Be The Start Of Another New Era For Tom Holland

In the midst of Spider-Man: Brand New Day's record-setting success, updates on Spider-Man 5 and when it will be released have started to come. Even before Tom Holland's fourth Spider-Man solo movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came out, it was clear that Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, along with the franchise star, envisioned making more adventures.

Sony and Marvel still have yet to confirm any details about Spider-Man 5, but the movie is absolutely coming. Sony chairman Tom Rothman, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton, and Holland have all addressed the inevitability of making another movie. Holland has even spoken about his interest in helping pass the baton from Peter Parker to Miles Morales before too long.

The Brand New Day sequel hasn't found a release date among the MCU's upcoming slate. This won't change due to the fourth film's phenomenal success. Sony Pictures' CEO Ravi Ahuja recently shared a Spider-Man 5 release timeline update where he confirmed there is no set release date and that these movies take "a couple years usually."

After already playing Spider-Man for a decade, Holland's journey as the web-slinger will keep extending well into the late 2020s. That means starting a new era for his Marvel superhero.

Spider-Man 5 Will Take Place In Phase 7 At The Earliest

Marvel and Sony moved quickly to make Holland's original Spider-Man trilogy, churning out a new solo film every two years: Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017, Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019, and Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. Not even the pandemic slowed down their plans. Audiences then had to be patient and wait five years to see Peter's story continue in Brand New Day.

That longer development cycle paid off big time, both in terms of the creative direction of Holland's fourth film and in building greater demand at the box office. It has been unclear if Sony would try to fast-track Spider-Man 5 to get it out within the old two-year cycle or if Holland, Zendaya, and others would be given more time to breathe. In either case, Phase 7 has been Spider-Man 5's earliest possible landing spot.

Brand New Day arrived in Phase 6, which concludes with Avengers: Secret Wars in December 2027. Phase 7 begins a few months later, with X-Men (May 5), Ghost Rider (July 28), and Black Panther 3 (December 15) on the schedule for 2028. There is no room for Sony to squeeze Spider-Man 5 in there, meaning 2029 is the soonest it could come. If so, then the sequel will certainly be part of Phase 7.

There is a chance that Spider-Man 5 won't come in Phase 7, though. It is unclear how Marvel plans to handle the lengths of Phases once the Multiverse Saga ends. If Marvel, Sony, and Holland take their time developing the sequel and make audiences wait four or five years to see Spider-Man 5, then it would likely fall into Phase 8. Either way, it puts Holland's Spider-Man in a new era of the MCU.

The MCU Will Look Very Different When Spider-Man Returns

Regardless of the exact Phase that Spider-Man 5 releases in, it's destined to be part of the MCU's next saga. Avengers: Secret Wars ends the Multiverse Saga. The MCU's third saga remains unconfirmed, but what is known about it shows just how different of a world Spider-Man will be operating in when he comes back.

Feige has confirmed that Secret Wars will reset the MCU timeline. How substantial the changes will be depends on what the Russos have in store for the next two Avengers. At the very least, this new MCU reality is expected to merge multiple universes, meaning the Fantastic Four, Deadpool, and others should now reside permanently in Spider-Man's reality. That opens up plenty of new crossover opportunities.

The other major change for the MCU and Spider-Man will be with the rise of mutants. Feige has teased how prominent the X-Men will be in what comes next, leading to the popular theory that Phase 7 is the start of The Mutant Saga. Peter already has some history with mutants after meeting Jean Grey in Brand New Day, but the X-Men team should be fully established by the time we see him next.

There's also no telling what Doomsday and Secret Wars will do to change the trajectory of Peter's story. He is sure to factor into one or both films, especially after Brand New Day's post-credits scene. Whether that means giving him the symbiote suit, bringing Spider-Man villains and heroes from other universes to the main MCU timeline, or something else, it won't just be everything around Peter that changes in a new-look reality.

How Brand New Day Already Set Up The MCU's Post-Secret Wars Future

Even if we're years away from seeing Spider-Man 5 and the MCU's post-Secret Wars landscape, the seeds of what is coming are being planted. This includes in Brand New Day, which has plenty of key reveals for what is coming in the years ahead for the massive franchise.

The biggest is Brand New Day's X-Men setup. Introducing Jean Grey and Bill Metzger gives the MCU two characters who will be important to future mutant stories. Jean is set to be the lead of X-Men. She is bound to be a central character for this universe for at least a decade, as the MCU can chronicle her really learning to control her powers and play the long game when it comes to tackling a proper Dark Phoenix arc.

Metzger should be a recurring villain for mutants, and he's set to be a huge threat thanks to Spider-Man. Peter's universal inhibitor looks to be the technology that will lead to mutant inhibitor collars. With Metzger on the run, he is sure to re-emerge with new allies — possibly at Trask Industries — and play a role in villainizing mutants in the public eye.

The latter point is already set up in Brand New Day, too. Jean holding a chunk of New York hostage with her psychic powers is not going to be forgotten; the topic has been a dividing point among MCU fans, even. Even if Jean and other X-Men wind up playing a role in saving the day in Secret Wars, the new timeline is sure to have some who still resent what happened before.

Furthermore, Brand New Day leaves several storylines in motion for Spider-Man 5 to pick up. Spider-Man cracking down on New York's criminals could come back to bite him. Peter rekindling the relationships he has with MJ and Ned Leeds will be important. More crossovers with Hulk, Punisher, and the X-Men are even possible. The future is bright, not just for Holland's hero but for the MCU as a whole.
