LTO summons Tesla owner, driver over unauthorized plate used 'for a shoot'

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show cause order against the driver and registered owner of a Tesla sedan caught driving in Caloocan City with a license plate assigned to another vehicle, the agency said Sunday.

In a press release, the LTO said the Tesla was reportedly being used in a shoot, during which another plate was attached over its original plate. Verification, however, showed that the plate belonged to a different vehicle.

"Because of this, the registered owner and designated driver are required to appear before the Intelligence and Investigation Division (IID) of the LTO Central Office on September 24, 2026, for a hearing,” the LTO said.

“They are also directed to submit a sworn statement or explanation, along with supporting documents regarding the incident,” it added.

The agency discovered the incident through a photo showing the Tesla driving along Monumento on September 19, 2026.

The driver and registered owner were directed to explain in writing why they should not be held accountable under Republic Act No. 4136 for the unauthorized use of a license plate and false representation.

They must also explain why the driver should not be declared an improper person to operate a motor vehicle.

If declared an improper person to operate a motor vehicle, the driver could face the suspension or revocation of his license.

Pending the investigation, the LTO ordered the surrender of the driver's license, placing it under a 90-day suspension. The vehicle will also remain under alarm status for the same period.

“The LTO enforces laws that everyone must follow. A shooting project cannot be used as an excuse to use a plate assigned to another vehicle,” LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao said.

“When the license plate is wrong, the vehicle's identity is compromised, and we will hold those responsible accountable,” he added.— MCG, GMA News
