Indonesia halts rice imports for domestic use under Prabowo-Gibran

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia stopped importing rice for domestic consumption in 2025 during the first two years of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s administration, as the government pursued food self-sufficiency as a key policy objective.

The Government Communications Agency (Bakom) said in a statement on Sunday that the policy was made possible by the country’s ample domestic rice supply.

“National rice production reached 34.69 million tons in 2025, up 13.29 percent from 2024. Indonesia did not import rice for domestic consumption throughout 2025,” Bakom Deputy for Partnerships and Media Relations Kurnia Ramadhana said.

He added that government rice reserves managed by state-run logistics company Bulog stood at 3.248 million tons at the end of 2025. National rice production is projected to reach 34.77 million tons in 2026, exceeding estimated domestic demand of 31.10 million tons.

According to Ramadhana, these developments stemmed from a range of government measures implemented since October 20, 2024.

Among them were reforms to subsidized fertilizer distribution, reductions in the maximum retail price (HET) of subsidized fertilizer, and various programs designed to support farming communities nationwide.

“The government simplified the distribution of subsidized fertilizer by eliminating 145 cumbersome regulations and reduced the HET by 20 percent to help lower farmers’ production costs,” he said.

Ramadhana added that the government’s food security agenda also includes efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in protein-rich fishery products, including through the Red and White Fishing Villages program.

“In 2025, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries implemented the program at 100 locations, with 65 villages already entering the operational trial phase,” he said.

He added that the government aims to expand the program to 1,386 locations by the end of 2026 to strengthen fisheries infrastructure, increase fishers’ productivity, and stimulate economic growth in coastal communities.
