Three months after Elon Musk promised to make a “historically accurate” version of The Odyssey using AI, Grok shared the first installment of its response to Christopher Nolan’s cinematic epic.

When Nolan’s take on Homer’s epic poem arrived in June, Musk accused the director of being an “anti-White racist” over his casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. “He wants the awards.” On Musk’s X and other right-leaning platforms, similar complaints were made about Elliot Page’s role as Sinon.

“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” Musk said in July. Despite the online noise, Nolan’s The Odyssey barreled to over $600 million at the U.S. box office, while Musk made no more mentions of his own version of the epic… until the first seven minutes arrived Friday on Grok.

Dubbed a “creative collaboration with Wonder Studios X and director Dev Walker,” the first chapter isn’t the “historically accurate” presentation of the fictional story that was promised; for starters, all the characters speak English and not Homeric Greek.

Technically, the AI Odyssey borrows a lot visually from Nolan’s Odyssey but less awe-inspiring, and even on an AI level, the acting is not great; “soulless” and “wooden” seems to be a common complaint among the AI-tolerant viewers in the comments.

As of press time, 4 million people had viewed Grok Imagine’s The Odyssey. Nolan’s The Odyssey has made over $1.78 billion worldwide.
