The President and Chief Executive Officer of HS Media Group, Taye Ige, has recounted his entrepreneurial journey, including the challenges he faced in building HotSports and expanding his media business.

Ige spoke at Rachisols’ Team Growth Training and Finish Strong ’26 programme in Lagos on Thursday, October 15, where he shared lessons from his three-decade career with about 20 young professionals.

According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Saturday, Ige traced the origin of HotSports to 1996, when he presented a sports segment on Morning Ride on NTA 2, Channel 5.

“Building HotSports has been a journey of opportunities, risks and difficult decisions. What started in 1996 as a five-to-seven-minute sports segment on NTA 2, Channel 5, gradually opened doors to sponsorships and the development of a sports media business.

“Although the segment lasted only five to seven minutes, it attracted attention and sponsorship opportunities that helped me recognise the commercial potential of sports media,” he said.

Ige recalled that Air France sponsored his coverage of the draws for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in Marseille, France, in December 1997, as well as the tournament itself in 1998.

He said an argumentative sports television programme he encountered during his stay in France inspired the format he later introduced to Nigerian audiences.

“HotSports first aired at 2:30 pm on the first Saturday of the final quarter of 1998. Early sponsorship support from Coca-Cola and UAC’s Gala helped sustain the programme and opened the door to other opportunities in sports media marketing,” he said.

The media entrepreneur explained that his initial ambition to establish an all-sports television channel eventually evolved into the development of HS Studios, a five-studio complex in Ikeja, Lagos.

He said advice from a training faculty member, Robert Patel, and his assessment of Nigeria’s production needs influenced the decision to establish the facility.

Reflecting on the difficulties he encountered, Ige said financing pressures, delays in foreign-exchange settlements and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic threatened the business.

“At a point, I had to liquidate assets I had held for years to settle debts and preserve the enterprise,” he said.

He said the experience taught him the importance of assessing risks, understanding financial commitments and making difficult decisions under pressure.

“These experiences reinforced the need to understand the financial implications of business decisions, manage risks carefully and take difficult steps when circumstances demand them,” he added.

Addressing the Rachisols team, Ige emphasised customer understanding, accountability, prudent resource management and cooperation across departments as essential ingredients for sustainable business growth.

He urged the young professionals to recognise the importance of working together towards shared organisational goals while remaining accountable for their responsibilities.

Reflecting on the engagement, Ige expressed satisfaction at the opportunity to share his experiences with the young executives.

He said he hoped the participants had gained lessons that would help them in their current roles and prepare them for entrepreneurship if they chose to pursue it in the future.

The Managing Director of Rachisols Group, Ola Solomi, introduced the guest speaker and delivered a vote of thanks at the end of the presentation.

The session formed part of Rachisols’ broader training programme focused on innovation, organisational culture, team development and strengthening the group’s businesses.
