GOOD Party terminates Sarah Mabotsa’s membership, withdraws Tshwane mayoral candidacy

The GOOD Party has terminated Sarah Mabotsa’s membership and removed her as a Tshwane councillor, effectively ending her bid to become the city’s mayor in the upcoming local government elections.

In a joint statement issued on Monday, 28 September, GOOD and RISE Mzansi said the decision follows what they described as breaches of GOOD’s party constitution.

The parties said GOOD leadership had informed the City of Tshwane’s Executive Mayor and City Manager that Mabotsa’s membership had been terminated and that she should be removed as a councillor and as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Economic Development.

“The termination follows breaches of the party’s Constitution,” the parties said.

They added that serving as a public representative comes with responsibilities and accountability to the people represented.

“In view of GOOD’s cooperation agreement with RISE Mzansi, Mabotsa will be withdrawn as the RISE Mayoral Candidate for Tshwane,” the statement said.

Mabotsa was announced as the joint RISE Mzansi and GOOD mayoral candidate for Tshwane in July. At the time, she was serving as the city’s MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning.

The two parties entered into a strategic cooperation framework ahead of the 2026 local government elections, while maintaining their separate political identities.

The parties said they remained committed to nominating what they described as ethical and credible leaders.

The City of Tshwane City Manager has also confirmed that his office would inform the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) of the councillor vacancy, according to the statement.

The announcement comes weeks before South Africans head to the polls for the local government elections on 4 November.

Mabotsa’s removal also leaves RISE Mzansi and GOOD needing to identify a replacement candidate for their Tshwane mayoral campaign.

The Multiparty coalition government in Tshwane has thanked Sarah Mabotsa for her service and acknowledged the role she played in making Tshwane an attractive destination.

“Ald Mabotsa served during an important period in our work to revitalise Tshwane’s economy and implement the Tshwane Economic Revitalisation Strategy (TERS).

“During her tenure, she championed Tshwane’s township and informal economy, helping to place informal traders and township entrepreneurs firmly on the City’s economic agenda. She contributed to the development of the City’s new informal trading by-law, efforts to modernise business licencing and initiatives such as Ithuba that seek to create practical opportunities for small businesses.”
