Bandung probes 88 Seoul restaurant over 24 food illness reports

Bandung, West Java (ANTARA) - Health officials in Indonesia's West Java province found hygiene and sanitation flaws at the 88 Seoul restaurant while investigating 24 suspected food contamination cases, an official said on Wednesday.

Dewi Primasari, the Bandung City Health Office's head of public health, said an initial environmental health inspection at the restaurant in the 23 Paskal shopping center found several areas needing further attention.

"Based on the initial inspection, there are several aspects related to hygiene and sanitation that the restaurant needs to improve," she said.

The inspection covered the location's layout, equipment, food ingredients and the use of standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Fresh and dry ingredients must be stored properly, and chemicals such as cleaning agents and dishwashing soap must be kept apart from food, she said.

"The separation still needs to be improved. In addition, given the limited space, the storage arrangement needs to be reorganized," she added.

The office also found that SOPs for storing and handling food ingredients had not been fully implemented at the restaurant.

Dewi urged all food processing and serving staff to improve their use of protective equipment.

"Food handlers must improve their personal protective equipment, including masks and hair cover," she said.

She said recommendations for improvement had been delivered directly to the restaurant.
The office will monitor whether the restaurant follows up on them.

As of Tuesday (Oct 6), 24 customers had reported symptoms after eating at the restaurant to the office through various channels.

The reports came from community health centers and from residents who contacted the office through its social media channels.

Dewi urged anyone who becomes ill after eating at the restaurant to report immediately to the nearest community health center or the office's official channels.
