MND Local BCS: PGA golf and Day of the Dead celebrations in Los Cabos
This year, for the first time, the PGA Tour scheduled its two golf tournaments in Mexico in consecutive weeks, putting them back-to-back on its FedExCup Fall Schedule.
Last week, the 2026 VidantaWorld Mexico Open was played in Nuevo Nayarit on the Greg Norman-designed Vidanta Vallarta Course, with three hours of daily coverage televised on Golf Channel — including the somewhat anticlimactic final round, in which Andrew Novak cruised comfortably to a five-shot margin of victory.
The PGA Tour returns to Cabo San Lucas
20 years of PGA TOUR golf in Mexico—and the history continues.
From Thursday through Sunday, the action shifts to Los Cabos for the World Wide Technology Championship (WWTC), held at the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal course at Diamante in Cabo San Lucas. Yes, Golf Channel will feature plenty of WWTC coverage, too, but for Cabeños (Los Cabos residents) and visiting tourists, the experience promises more fun and local flavor live.
The tournament field was confirmed last Friday, and as expected, many of the best players in the world will be teeing it up in Los Cabos for the WWTC, including returning champion Ben Griffin (coming off a tied-for-fourth-place finish in Nuevo Nayarit), former U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover, and electrifying newcomer Jackson Koivun, who won in just his third start after turning pro this summer and was recently a member of the victorious U.S. President’s Cup team.
- Dates: Nov. 5-8
- Location: Diamante, Cabo San Lucas
- Cost: General admission entry starts at US $35 per ticket, with abundant VIP upgrades available.
Día de Muertos on the water in Los Cabos

The sixth edition of “Altars at Sea” returns to Cabo San Lucas, where celebrations of all sorts — including for Mexico’s iconic Day of the Dead — are judged to be better when they take place on boats.
About 20 ofrenda-laden vessels participated during Monday’s parade in Cabo San Lucas Bay. However, the four-day festival also features art, music and maritime culture, including Sunday’s “mermaids” panel discussion featuring well-known female athletes such as Olympic artistic swimmer Pamela Toscano Millán, open-water swimmer Stephanie Montero and rower Aylin Ibarra Madueña.
Toscano also directed an aquatic performance entitled “The Return of the Chalchiuhcuitle and the Guardians of the Blue Offering” on Monday.
- Dates: Nov. 1-4
- Location: Cabo San Lucas Bay, Playa El Médano
- Cost: Free
Inclement weather postpones women’s-only breast cancer charity fishing tournament

Fishing season in Baja California Sur always has an element of potential profit involved, but charitable causes are usually front-and-center, too. For instance, although Bisbee’s trio of fishing tournaments in Los Cabos — The East Cape Offshore (US $1.6 million), Los Cabos Offshore (US $2.39 million), and Black and Blue (US $7.46 million) — exceeded US $10 million in prize pools this year, Bisbee’s also has a long and storied history of supporting the local community, from Casa Hogar to the innumerable free meals donated through Hope for Los Cabos and the launching of a Los Cabos fireboat.
The prize pool is a bit smaller for the first-ever women’s-only Onco Reto Ferre-Mar (“Women Conquering the Sea”) fishing tournament in the state capital, La Paz, whose name references a local nonprofit — Grupo Onco Reto, which supports women diagnosed with breast cancer — and the tournament sponsor: Ferre-Mar, a marine hardware and outdoor adventure store in BCS. Still, a guaranteed 300,000 pesos is on the line for teams targeting dorado (mahi-mahi), as well as jackpot-eligible species like marlin, tuna and wahoo … with all entry fees going towards the worthy cause.
“All the funds raised in this tournament go directly to (the non-profit), which consists of breast cancer survivors,” Cristina Higuera Murillo, president of Grupo Onco Reto, told Tribuna de Mexico. “We are very excited because we have the support of socially responsible companies.”

Ladies fishing events on the rise in BCS
No, this is not the only ladies-only fishing tournament on the peninsula. The Ladies Shoot Out has been drawing distaff anglers to Los Barriles on Los Cabos’ East Cape since 2025, and the previous version (the Ladies Only Fishing Tournament) for a half-dozen years before that.
This year, La Paz hosted its inaugural women’s shore fishing tournament. Meanwhile, the neighboring state of Baja California also has its own fishing competition for women: Reinas del Mar, or “Queens of the Sea,” held at a different location each summer.
But Onco Reto Ferre-Mar is the only one this year that has had to be rescheduled due to weather conditions. BCS has been inundated with rain over the past few months as a Super El Niño-charged hurricane season has sent one tropical storm after another hurtling towards the region. Most have been narrow misses that did little damage outside of flooding from the prodigious rainfall, but the latest, Tropical Storm Vance, also seems to have knocked Onco Reto Ferre-Mar from its scheduled calendar slot — although organizers mentioned only the El Niño phenomenon generally in their official statement.
Originally slated to take place on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, the tournament has been pushed back a month and is now confirmed for early December.
- Dates: Dec. 5-6
- Location: Muelle Fiscal, La Paz
- Cost: Entry is 7,000 pesos per team
