SUNGAI PETANI: One motorcyclist was killed and another seriously injured after their motorcycles brushed against the side of a trailer while they were trying to shelter from rain on the North-South Expressway.

The incident happened around midnight at Km96.2. Mohd Khairul A'zami Mohd Nazeri, 23, from Kampung Permatang Kong, Mukim Padang Hang, Alor Setar, died at the scene.

The other motorcyclist, also 23 and from the same village, is being treated at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said both victims were travelling from Alor Setar towards Sungai Petani in the left lane.

"When they reached the location, they tried to stop beneath the flyover to shelter from the rain.

"As they tried to avoid another motorcycle that had stopped there, their two Yamaha Y15ZR motorcycles brushed against each other before hitting the side of a trailer in the same lane.

"Both motorcyclists fell beneath the middle section of the trailer and were run over and dragged along," he said in a statement today.

Hanyan said the trailer driver was uninjured and the deceased's body was taken to the HSAH Forensic Department for a post-mortem.

He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"The 40-year-old driver from Bayan Lepas, Penang, was taken to the Kuala Muda district police Narcotics Crime Investigation Division for screening and tested negative for drugs," he said.
