Rivers United, El-Kanemi, Shooting Stars face decisive CAF tests

After Rangers International’s hard earned win via penalties against AS SOBEMAP away in Lome, Togo, Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF inter-club competitions face another decisive day on the continent, with Rivers United, El-Kanemi Warriors and Shooting Stars all carrying the country’s hopes in crucial return-leg fixtures.

The three Nigerian clubs have taken contrasting paths into the decisive stage of the preliminary rounds, but the objective is the same: survive the first hurdle and keep Nigeria’s continental campaign moving.

Rivers United will lead the charge in the CAF Champions League when they host Côte d’Ivoire’s San Pedro at 4pm, while El-Kanemi Warriors and Shooting Stars will battle for progression in the CAF Confederation Cup later in the day.

With CAF’s preliminary-round return legs scheduled for this weekend, the stakes could hardly be higher. The winners of these ties will advance to the second preliminary round, taking another step towards the group stages.

Rivers United vs San Pedro

For Rivers United, it is a case of finishing the job after the Port Harcourt club secured an encouraging 1-1 draw away to San Pedro in the first leg in Côte d’Ivoire.

The result gave the Nigerian side an important away platform, but Finidi George’s men know there is still plenty of work to do by 4pm on Sunday, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

Rivers United will have home advantage behind them and will be expected to approach the encounter with greater attacking intent, knowing that a victory would send them through to the second preliminary round.

The 1-1 first-leg draw was one of Nigeria’s more notable results in the opening round, particularly considering that it came away from home. Rivers United now have the opportunity to turn that advantage into qualification on Nigerian soil.

The Pride of Rivers will also be looking to improve on their continental campaign from last season, when they reached the Champions League group stage but finished bottom of a group containing Pyramids, RS Berkane and Power Dynamos.

For Finidi and his players, the equation is simple: perform in Uyo, take their chances and secure passage into the next round.

UD Internacional vs El-Kanemi Warriors

If Rivers United are facing a tense second-leg battle, El-Kanemi Warriors head into their encounter with UD Internacional of Guinea-Bissau in a far more comfortable position.

The Maiduguri-based club produced the most emphatic result among Nigeria’s representatives in the opening legs, defeating UDIB 3-0.

That commanding advantage means El-Kanemi travel into the return leg with a significant cushion and a strong opportunity to complete the job away from home.

The Warriors’ first-leg victory was part of a mixed but encouraging opening weekend for Nigeria, with the four representatives recording two wins and two draws across the Champions League and Confederation Cup.

El-Kanemi will nevertheless have to remain disciplined. Continental football has produced enough surprises over the years to make complacency dangerous, particularly in a return leg where the opposition has nothing to lose.

Progression would put El-Kanemi into the second preliminary round, where the challenge is significantly tougher. CAF’s draw has already mapped out a potential meeting with Moroccan giants Raja Casablanca for the winner of the El-Kanemi-UDIB tie.

That potential clash provides an additional incentive for the Nigerian side to complete the job.

CS Sfaxien vs Shooting Stars

Shooting Stars face arguably the most delicate task of the three Nigerian clubs when they travel to Tunisia to confront CS Sfaxien.

The Oluyole Warriors carry a slender 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Abeokuta, where Lucky Emmanuel scored the only goal to give the Nigerian side a narrow lead.

Unlike El-Kanemi, Shooting Stars cannot afford to sit too deeply and simply protect their advantage. CS Sfaxien will have home support and the quality to make the contest extremely uncomfortable for the Ibadan club.

The Tunisian giants will also know that scoring first would immediately swing the tie in their favour, making Shooting Stars’ defensive discipline and ability to manage the game particularly important.

For Shooting Stars, however, reaching this stage already represents a significant return to the continental scene. The Ibadan club are back in Africa after more than two decades and are competing in the Confederation Cup for the first time, despite having previously won the competition in 1992 when it was still known as the CAF Cup.

Coach Salisu Yusuf was brought in with continental experience in mind, and his biggest task now is to guide the Oluyole Warriors through what promises to be a hostile second leg in Sfax.

A draw would be enough to send Shooting Stars through, while a victory would make an even bigger statement about their return to African football.

One day, three Nigerian missions

The three fixtures offer different challenges.

Rivers United have to turn a valuable away draw into home qualification. El-Kanemi Warriors must protect a three-goal advantage and avoid an upset. Shooting Stars, meanwhile, have to defend a one-goal lead against one of Tunisia’s established clubs.

All three are chasing more than just progression.

Nigeria’s continental reputation has suffered in recent years, and strong performances from its clubs remain important to restoring the country’s standing in CAF competitions. This season, Rangers International and Rivers United are representing Nigeria in the Champions League, while El-Kanemi Warriors and Shooting Stars are flying the flag in the Confederation Cup.

CAF’s new-season format means the pressure will only increase. The Confederation Cup, for instance, features 56 clubs, with the first preliminary round winners joining eight exempted teams in the second preliminary round, from which 16 sides will advance to the group stage.

For Nigeria’s three clubs in action, however, the immediate target is much simpler.

Rivers United, El-Kanemi Warriors and Shooting Stars must get the job done, and keep Nigeria’s continental flag flying.
