Malaysia's diversity makes nation stronger, says Penang CM

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia's strength lies in its ability to unite, collaborate and progress together as one nation, said Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

In his 2026 Malaysia Day message, Chow emphasised that diversity was not merely a social reality, but a core component of the state's identity and resilience.

"Differences in race, religion, culture and language should not be walls that divide us. Instead, this diversity makes Penang dynamic, progressive, competitive and harmonious," he said.

Chow highlighted the concrete progress achieved through the Penang2030 Vision over the past eight years, pointing to a rise in average household income from RM5,409 to RM7,386 while maintaining strong environmental sustainability and welfare support.

On the economic front, Penang secured RM17.3 billion in approved manufacturing investments for the first half of 2026.

Foreign direct investment (FDI) accounted for RM12.8 billion (74 per cent) of the total, with 177 approved projects expected to create 19,337 jobs.

Notably, around 69 per cent of these investments came from existing company expansions, reflecting sustained investor confidence.

Tourism and infrastructure also saw major boosts.

International passenger traffic at Penang International Airport (PIA) rose 11 per cent between January and July 2026 to reach more than 2.64 million travellers.

Chow said strategic mega-projects, including the Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT), the Juru-Sungai Dua Elevated Highway, Penang International Logistics Aeropark (PILA), the PIA expansion and Silicon Island, would improve urban connectivity and expand economic access for all.

In education, Penang became the first state to equip all national schools with interactive smartboards while expanding STEAM MakerLabs.

"On this Malaysia Day, let us strengthen mutual trust, reject hatred and prejudice, and continue building a united, progressive, inclusive and harmonious Malaysia," he added.
