African cultural film festival to light up Houston

Translate

The African Cultural Film Festival, AFFRICUFF, is set to return to Houston for its highly anticipated fourth edition, taking place from October 23 to 25, 2026, at Star Cinema Grill, Richmond, Texas.

Founded by award-winning filmmaker and film scholar, Dr. Emem Isong Misodi, AFFRICUFF continues its mission of celebrating African and culturally diverse cinema, amplifying underrepresented voices and creating meaningful connections between filmmakers, audiences and communities.
Now in its fourth year, the festival has grown into an important cultural gathering in Houston, bringing together storytellers, creatives, film enthusiasts and cultural ambassadors from different backgrounds to celebrate the power of cinema to connect people across geographical and cultural boundaries.
This year’s theme, “New Voices. New Visions,” shines a spotlight on emerging filmmakers, fresh perspectives and innovative storytelling while celebrating the rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire cinema across Africa and its diaspora.
Dr. Shaibu Hussein has been unveiled as Head of Jury, with Tanya Price, Uche Macauley, Simon Chibuzor Emeka and Onimisi Adaba as members of the jury.
Festival goers can look forward to three days of engaging film screenings, filmmaker conversations, cultural exchanges, networking opportunities and special festival experiences, culminating in a closing celebration recognizing creativity and cinematic excellence.
More than a showcase of films, AFFRICUFF is a platform where cultures meet, stories are shared and new connections are formed.

For Dr. Misodi, AFFRICUFF represents a deeply personal commitment to the arts, cultural identity and community building.

With more than three decades of experience in the film industry and a PhD in Film and Media Studies specializing in cultural hybridity, Dr. Misodi believes cinema has a unique ability to bridge cultural differences and foster understanding.

“AFFRICUFF is much more than a film festival to me. It is a celebration of who we are, where we come from and the beautiful possibilities that emerge when different cultures meet. My passion has always been to tell stories, promote the arts and create spaces where people can connect through culture. Even when the journey is challenging, I believe this vision is worth pursuing. We want people to come, experience different cultures, discover new voices and leave inspired,” she said.

The 2026 edition promises a vibrant gathering of filmmakers, actors, cultural ambassadors, industry professionals and film lovers, reflecting Houston’s rich multicultural identity.

Through its carefully curated film selections and accompanying conversations, AFFRICUFF seeks to encourage dialogue around identity, heritage, migration, cultural exchange and the shared human experiences that unite people across borders.

The festival also provides a valuable platform for independent filmmakers to showcase their work, engage with audiences and build relationships within the international creative community.
