"Brilliant" mystery-thriller packed with twists jumps up Netflix top 10 chart as fans rush to watch

Netflix's new Dutch crime drama The Perfect Lie has been doing pretty well for itself, as it's currently sitting in fifth place in the Top 10 Series Today chart on the UK streamer's chart, almost a week after it had been released.

Based on the bestselling novel The Dinner Club by Saskia Noor, the seven episode series follows four couples in a tight-knit group who enjoy an extravagant and hedonistic lifestyle.

On one fateful night, one of the villas and the entire group's friendship goes up in flames. In the wake of one of death, the web of lies that served as the group's foundation starts to unravel.

The show hasn't received a huge amount of attention from critics, but there are a few reviews out there.

The Guardian wrote: "Big Little Lies feels like an obvious comparison, but even though the premise is familiar, it’s a slick and twisty take."

"It doesn’t reinvent the genre," said outlet LeisureByte, "but the way it approaches it and creates an atmosphere of confusion and doubt keeps things moving effortlessly.

In a mixed review, Decider stated: "The Perfect Lie is less annoying to us than what we usually see in the “rich people being awful” genre. But what promises to be an intricate thriller is done a disservice by a lack of depth in the storytelling."

The viewer response on Rotten Tomatoes seems positive too, with one fan writing: "This was a really brilliant series with the intimate scenes you won't easily see again, excellent acting with huge intrigue and intensity."

A common consensus among fans is that the ending has definitely got them wanting to see a second season, but has it been successful enough to greenlight one?
