Bersatu wants clarity on Najib's house arrest implementation

KUALA LUMPUR: The government should explain the legal framework, procedures and criteria that will be used to implement house arrest involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali also wants the government to explain whether the same privilege could be considered for other prisoners who meet the required criteria.

To ensure transparency in the implementation of the Pardons Board's decision, he said Bersatu also demanded that all conditions imposed on Najib, including serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, be clearly detailed and announced to the public.

"This is important to avoid the perception that there is one form of treatment for the nobility and influential individuals, and another for ordinary citizens.

"This explanation will prevent public unease that could undermine the integrity of the judiciary and public confidence in the legal and integrity systems," he said in a statement today.

It was reported yesterday that Najib was granted house arrest for the remainder of his sentence on condition that he pays the RM50 million fine imposed following his conviction in the SRC International case.

The Federal Territories Pardons Board, in a statement, had said that Najib must comply with all conditions imposed for him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028.
