Ipoa launches investigations into fatal shooting at Kindiki meeting in Nembure

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) has launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting of two men during a confrontation at a political meeting attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki at Nembure Stadium in Embu County.
The incident that occurred on Sunday, September 13, left two people dead and six vehicles burnt, prompting calls for investigations and justice from the victims’ families.
Ipoa Commissioner John Muchiri said the authority was closely monitoring the matter and would establish what transpired during the confrontation.

Muchiri said Ipoa would complete its investigations before determining the appropriate course of action, adding that individuals found culpable would face the necessary action.
“After investigations, the matter will be handed over to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP),” he said in Embu.
The commissioner said Ipoa was committed to ensuring justice was served and warned that police officers found to have used excessive force would be held accountable.
“If we find any police officers to have used excessive force, those responsible will be held accountable,” said Mr Muchiri.
He said the authority had a responsibility to investigate and address allegations of police misconduct and unlawful use of force.
The probe comes as families of the victims continuing demanding for answers over the circumstances surrounding their relatives' deaths.
Margaret Muthanje, an aunt to the late Moses Munene from Gichugu in Manyatta Constituency, said the family was devastated by the loss and wanted justice for their kin.

Muthanje described Munene as a hardworking young man who was determined to build a better future.
“What we want the government to do is to make sure we get justice for Moses,” she said.
She questioned the circumstances that led to Munene’s death during the chaos at the stadium, saying he had a promising future.
The family has called on Ipoa and other investigative agencies to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable.
