A 30-year-old Indian-origin man has been jailed for 27 years in Australia for fatally stabbing a fellow international student and attempting to kill another after a drunken argument in Melbourne.Robin Robin was sentenced in the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday for murdering 22-year-old Navjeet Singh Sandhu and attempting to murder 30-year-old Sharwan Singh in Ormond in May 2024, Australia Today reported.A jury found Robin guilty after he argued during the trial that he had acted in self-defence. The court imposed a 20-year non-parole period. The violence began after Robin had been drinking whisky with friends at his home while celebrating his brother Abhijeet Abhijeet buying a car.

Sharwan later left the gathering to play cards at Navjeet’s home without saying goodbye, prompting Robin to call and abuse him and demand that he return repeatedly. When Sharwan eventually came back with Navjeet to collect his belongings, Robin attacked him with a knife, stabbing him in the chest.Navjeet stepped in to help his friend but was then attacked himself. Robin grabbed him by the collar and stabbed him repeatedly as he tried to get away.

Navjeet suffered fatal injuries to his heart and lungs and died. Sharwan survived.Justice Andrew Tinney described the attack as “unprovoked and uncalled for” and said Robin had acted with “murderous anger”. He also described the violence as “extreme and wanton”, noting that the attack was carried out against innocent victims in a public setting and had caused fear in the community, as per the outlet. The judge also found that Robin had not demonstrated genuine remorse.

After the attack, Robin fled Victoria with his brother and was arrested in New South Wales two days later.“Your lack of regret and remorse for your offending has persisted until the present time,” Justice Tinney said.Navjeet’s father, Jitender Sandhu, watched the sentencing through a video link and said his son’s death had destroyed the hopes and dreams of the family.Robin has spent more than two years behind bars since his arrest and is expected to face deportation to India after completing his prison sentence.
