Eric Bana's Unsung Action Thriller Hanna Is Officially Free On Streaming

A graduate of McMaster University, Ryan began his career in public relations before attending Vancouver Film School. There, he built lasting industry connections and optioned a feature film screenplay.

Eric Bana continues to be a fixture in Hollywood, recently leading Netflix's Untamed series. Though the Australian actor has dabbled with TV over the years, he is primarily known for movies, becoming a household name with titles like Black Hawk Down (2001), Hulk (2003), Troy (2004), and Munich (2005). Bana no longer leads films in the same way he did in the early 2000s, but he remains a notable screen presence, featuring in Star Trek (2009), Lone Survivor (2013), King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017), and, most recently, Apex (2026). Now, another Bana title is making a comeback.

15 years after hitting theaters, Hanna is now completely free to watch, recently landing on the ad-supported streaming service Tubi. Directed by Joe Wright, the action thriller puts Bana into more of a mentor role, with Saoirse Ronan leading the cast as the titular 16-year-old assassin.

Hanna Is Now Free To Watch on Tubi

Also starring Cate Blanchett, Vicky Krieps, Michelle Dockery, and Jason Flemyng, among others, Hanna follows the eponymous character as she embarks on a mission across Europe while pursued by a ruthless intelligence agent. The spy thriller was made on a budget of $30 million and ultimately grossed $63 million at the box office, a relatively disappointing result considering most movies need to gross two and a half times their budget to break even in theaters.

Still, Hanna's newfound availability on Tubi means it's about to reach a much wider audience. Working in the film's favor is the fact that it was generally well received. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie, which was written by Seth Lochhead and David Farr, has a decent 71% critics' score, though the audience-driven Popcornmeter is a bit lower at 66%. Not to be confused with the Hanna TV show that ran for three seasons on Prime Video, the 2011 movie earned praise for its strong performances and thrilling action sequences.

Hanna Remains An Underrated Bana Movie

For Bana, Hanna marked a follow-up to The Time Traveler's Wife (2009). After this fantastical romance, Hanna served as a return to action for Bana, who gets several standout sequences as Erik, an experienced ex-CIA operative and the father to Ronan's character. The 2011 movie featuring Bana in more of a supporting capacity would preview some of what's to come for the actor, who is more of a secondary figure in films like The Finest Hours (2013), Lone Survivor, The Secret Scripture (2016), and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

It remains to be seen whether Hanna being free to watch on Tubi will lead to a resurgence for the movie, but it still stands as an interesting Bana project. With the recent success of Untamed and Apex on Netflix, Bana has been solidified as a viewership draw on streaming, which sets the 2011 action thriller up for success.
