SAN ILDEFONSO, ILOCOS SUR, Philippines — Residents, commuters and motorists are now using the newly completed Bailey bridge in Santa, Ilocos Sur, which provides a temporary crossing following the closure of the Calungbuyan Bridge due to damage caused by continuous rains.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Ilocos Sur 2nd District Engineering Office completed the Bailey bridge on Wednesday, Sept. 16, allowing residents from Barangays Rancho, Dammay, Calungbuyan, Oribi and Casiber to travel safely to the Santa town proper.

The temporary bridge also serves as an alternative route for transporting agricultural and other local products to markets and commercial areas while the Calungbuyan Bridge remains closed.

According to the DPWH, it previously observed damage on the approach of the Calungbuyan Bridge, prompting authorities to close it as a safety precaution.

The project was undertaken in response to President Marcos’ directive to ensure that affected communities have immediate access to safe and passable routes.

The DPWH said the damaged portion of the Calungbuyan Bridge will be assessed for appropriate repairs or rehabilitation. /cb
