Indonesia's rights minister says development must be felt by public

Indonesia's Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai said development achievements matter only when people feel them in their daily lives, such as children going to school, the sick receiving care and workers getting protection.

Pigai made the statement on Wednesday at the 2026 National Human Rights Development Planning Meeting.

He also underlined the close link between the government's development direction and the fulfillment of human rights.

Other examples include persons with disabilities accessing public services independently and people living in a healthy environment.

"That is where the relationship between development and human rights becomes real," Pigai said.

He said the human rights advancement agenda is in line with President Prabowo Subianto's Asta Cita vision and the 1945 Constitution.

According to him, the connection between the Asta Cita vision and human rights must be translated into policy choices, planning, budgeting and public services, he said.

On the occasion, Pigai officially opened the meeting, themed "Strengthening Participatory, Responsive, and Anticipatory Human Rights Development Planning."

The event also kicked off a series of activities commemorating the 78th World Human Rights Day, which falls on December 10.

These consisted of the 2026 National Human Rights Development Planning Meeting, the 2026 Coordination Meeting of Human Rights-Aware Villages, and the Human Rights Ministry's 2nd Service Day.

Besides these main agendas, the event saw the launch of a map of the fulfillment of public basic rights needs down to village level, an important instrument for data-based policy making.

Pigai said the meeting gave the public the widest possible say in decision-making, with "human rights drivers" carrying the voices of remote residents, vulnerable groups and people struggling to access public services fully and safely.

He added that the meeting also discussed current issues that intersect with human rights, such as the development of artificial intelligence, neurorights, climate change, energy transition and demographic dynamics.
