Texting
The first messaging platform, ICQ, that evolved into texting was developed by alumnus Dr. Yossi Vardi. It was sold to AOL for $408 million in 1998.

Apple Face ID
Alumnus Aviad Maizels has founded multiple companies acquired by Apple in massive tech deals, one of which was responsible for the foundational technology behind Apple’s Face ID.

Arrow Antimissile
Alumnus Dov Raviv envisioned this long-range mobile defense system and led the team that developed Arrow 1 in 1990. Other alumni later helped improve the system, including Arrow 3, first deployed in June 2025 to intercept Iranian ballistic missiles.

Pillcam®
Invented by Gavriel Iddan, recipient of three Technion degrees, this “pill” is an alternative to invasive procedures. The swallowable camera transmits 50,000 color images as it makes the journey through the digestive tract and is then naturally excreted.

Drip Irrigation
Alumnus Raphael Mehoudar developed the next generation of drippers, which revolutionized global agriculture — particularly in arid climates — by greatly increasing the efficiency of water use and enabling tremendous increases in food production in an environmentally friendly way. Today it is used in more than 110 countries.

The USB Flash Drive
Alumnus Dov Moran invented the first thumb drive in 1995, followed by the USB flash drive in 1999. The invention revolutionized portable storage and was sold to SanDisk for $1.6 billion in 2006.

Microsoft Excel
After spending four years at Microsoft headquarters in Seattle, Technion alumnus Yair Helman returned to Israel in 2014 to lead the company’s newly formed Excel group. With a focus on Excel’s cloud-based platform, the team has transformed the software from a desktop spreadsheet into a tool that is accessible from any device with a web browser.

Building the Future Since 1924
