Kaizer Chiefs are out of title race and here’s why

Translate

Kaizer Chiefs’ Betway Premiership title hopes have suffered another setback following their disappointing 1-1 draw against Stellenbosch FC at FNB Stadium on Tuesday night.

Amakhosi found themselves trailing in the second half but did not take long to respond, with Mduduzi Shabalala restoring parity. Despite pushing for a winner, the Glamour Boys were unable to find a breakthrough and had to settle for a point.

Kaizer Chiefs losing ground on title

The result leaves Chiefs nine points behind log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, while second-placed Orlando Pirates sit eight points ahead of them on 22 points.

With just eight matches played, Amakhosi already have significant ground to make up in the title race. Sitting fourth on the standings, their focus could increasingly shift towards securing a CAF inter-club competition spot for next season.

For Kaizer Chiefs to get back into serious title contention, they will need to put together a strong winning run while hoping both Sundowns and Pirates drop points in the second half of the campaign.

Under new coach Fernando da Cruz, the Soweto giants have shown signs of promise, with improved organisation offering some encouragement. However, their inability to consistently turn performances into victories remains a concern.

With the gap at the top continuing to grow, Kaizer Chiefs face an uphill battle if they are to challenge for the league title this season.

It looks more likely that they will fight for third spot with AmaZulu once again after dropping points at home against Stellies.
