For Midsomer Murders fans! Cosy detective drama is trending now on this UK streamer

Translate

The Brokenwood Mysteries, the New Zealand detective drama that's been compared to Midsomer Murders, is once again trending on UK streamer U. On the service's Top 10 This Week list, the show is sitting in 10th place, behind things like The Chelsea Detective, The Bill, Classic EastEnders and MasterChef Australia.

The show stars Neill Rea and Fern Sutherland as Mike Shepherd and Kristin Sims, two mismatched detectives who slowly build a camaraderie as they solve crimes in the quiet town of Brokenwood.

Pretty standard stuff, but the formula is working, as the show has been running for 12 seasons since it first premiered in 2014.

On IMDb, the show has an impressive user score of 7.9/10, worked out as the average from over 11,000 ratings.

You don't have to look far to see people comparing it to Midsomer Murders, with one viewer stating: "Both series have the small community/rural settings which provides a great backdrop and an assortment of unique and eccentric characters."

While Midsomer Murders is a classic piece of British TV one viewer on IMDb went as far to say: "For a variety of reasons I find Brokenwood much more enjoyable."

And it's not the only site where fans have made the comparison.

"They are similar in some ways, and I definitely love both, but overall I think Brokenwood is maybe a better show", a fan on Reddit said.

"It’s a little more quirky, and there are a lot of recurring characters from the town, which really helps create a sense of place. Midsomer is great, but outside of the main cast, each episode tends to feel a little insular. And while all these murders taking place in one tiny NZ town (as opposed to a wider county area) is absolutely ridiculous, I think the general tone makes it work."
