Rains to persist over Luzon; fair weather in Visayas, Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — The southwest monsoon may still bring rains over Luzon, while generally fair weather may prevail over portions of Visayas and Mindanao until Saturday, Sept. 12, the state weather bureau said.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecaster Daniel Villamil said in the 5 p.m. weather advisory that gloomy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms may affect Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon within the next 24 hours.

This is due to the trough of the low-pressure area (LPA) off Southwestern Luzon outside the Philippine area of responsibility and the southwest monsoon, according to Pagasa.

“For Metro Manila and most of Luzon, due to the combined effects of the trough of a low-pressure area and the southwest monsoon, we will also experience cloudy skies and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms,” Villamil said.

In the coming days, rains prevailing over Luzon may lessen as the LPA moves away from the country, he added.

Pagasa earlier issued Weather Advisory No. 80, stating that the southwest monsoon is now less likely to bring significant rains over the western section of Northern and Central Luzon.

Meanwhile, Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao may expect “generally improving weather conditions” on Friday, with only occasional rains.

“For the rest of the country, particularly over Visayas and Mindanao, generally fair weather will still prevail,” he added. /mcm
