"Impressive" British drama with Stephen Graham gets intense must-see trailer

New British drama movie Animol has released a must-see trailer ahead of its release. Directed by Ashley Walters and featuring his Adolescence co-star Stephen Graham, the film takes place in a juvenile detention centre.

We follow Troy (Tut Nyuot), who is thrown into this brutal world and has to deal with daily threats from other inmates – though forms a bond with cellmate Krystian (Vladyslav Baliuk). However, their friendship starts to become a vulnerability.

In the first trailer, we get a taste of what's to come, with Graham's Welfare Officer speaking to the inmates about "shame" and how it leads to toxic consequences. At the same time we see Troy's life in the institution, with increasingly violent scenes.

It comes ahead of Animol's cinema release, which Digital Spy recently revealed would be 30 October.

The movie marks Walters's feature directorial debut, and premiered to rave reviews earlier this year, with Radio Times calling it an "impressive, confident debut".

In Digital Spy's five-star verdict, we said: "Just when you think you've seen everything that prison-set stories have to offer, something like Sing Sing, Stephen Graham's BBC show Time and now Animol comes along, drawing new inspiration to push back against the systemic horrors of incarceration.

"And here especially, there is strength to be found in tenderness, connection and even love, just when 'despair' threatens to overwhelm entirely."

The Hollywood Reporter further described it as "grim and wrapped in despair much of the time but willing to make space for hope, understanding and forgiveness", adding: "Most of all it’s never banal, always involving, with fully convincing performances across the board."

As well as the aforementioned stars, Animol also features Boarders' Sekou Diaby and Enola Homes 3's Sharon Duncan-Brewster.

Animol is released in UK cinemas on 30 October. It receives its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on 11 October.
