‘The Pitt’ Showrunner R. Scott Gemmill Delivers Rallying Cry for “What’s Real” After Emmy Win

The Pitt capped a fairly wide-open night at the the 2026 Emmy Awards (non-comedy divisions) by winning best drama series.

The win was the second straight for the HBO Max series, but only its second of the night. Other Emmys in the drama categories during Monday’s telecast also went to The Diplomat, Pluribus (twice), Task and Slow Horses. That was a change from some recent years, where one or two shows dominated the field (see: Shōgun in 2024, Succession in 2023).

The Pitt beat out The Diplomat, The Gilded Age, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Paradise, Pluribus, Slow Horses and Your Friends & Neighbors for the award.

Accepting the award, The Pitt co-creator and showrunner R. Scott Gemmill issued a plea for his fellow nominees and the rest of the TV industry to keep “shin[ing] a light” on important stories.

“We’re entertainers — we make you laugh, we make you cry. Occasionally we make you look away in disgust,” Gemmill said. “… But I see a whole community still trying to do the right thing. It’s so hard to tell what’s real and what we can believe anymore, which makes telling honest stories about real human struggles more important than ever. I’m so happy we get to do that.”

He continued, “People need to know the truth, and we need to continue telling them the truth in whatever way we can. Sometimes it’s storytelling that allows us to do so, and that’s more important than ever. Keep doing what you’re doing.”

Noah Wyle also won his second consecutive Emmy for best lead actor in a drama on Monday for playing Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch on The Pitt. The series took home seven Emmys in total this year, having won five Creative Arts awards (including one for the short-form show Inside The Pitt) earlier in the month.
