Weather warnings stack up as SAWS flags six alerts for Tuesday

Tuesday, 15 September’s weather report shows partly cloudy to cloudy, cool to warm conditions across most of the country, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers expected in several provinces.

SAWS has issued six separate warnings today, covering disruptive rain, severe thunderstorms and damaging winds across multiple provinces.

ACCORDING TO SAWS, THE WEST CARRIES THE HEAVIEST WARNINGS

Gauteng stays partly cloudy and warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers.

A “high” UVB sunburn index is in effect, so sun precautions are worth taking if you’re outdoors for long.

Mpumalanga sees cloudy conditions in the east. Morning drizzle and fog patches are expected over the eastern Highveld and escarpment.

Otherwise, it stays partly cloudy and cool to warm, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the extreme south-west.

Limpopo stays cloudy with morning drizzle along the escarpment.

Otherwise, expect partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions, with isolated showers and thundershowers in the south-western Bushveld. It will be fine in places in the north-west.

North West turns partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm.

Expect scattered showers and thundershowers, isolated in the extreme east.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds covers the province.

The Free State stays partly cloudy, windy and cool to warm.

Scattered showers and thundershowers are expected, isolated in the north-east.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds covers the central and western parts.

The Northern Cape turns cloudy, windy and cool to cold.

Expect scattered showers and thundershowers, widespread in the east and central parts.

A Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain covers eastern Namakwa.

Alongside this, a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms covers the Nama Khoi and Kamiesberg municipalities, and a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds covers the eastern parts of the province.

WHY THE CAPE AND COAST CARRY THE HEAVIEST WARNINGS

The Western Cape turns cloudy and cool to cold. Expect scattered showers and thundershowers too, widespread over the north-eastern parts.

A Yellow Level 4 warning for disruptive rain covers the Central Karoo District.

Alongside this, a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms covers the West Coast, Cape Winelands, Overberg Districts and the City of Cape Town.

The western half of the Eastern Cape turns windy in the north.

Otherwise, it stays cloudy and cool to warm, with scattered showers and thundershowers, widespread in the north-west.

The eastern half sees warm to hot conditions with morning fog south of the escarpment.

Otherwise, it turns cloudy, windy and cool, with scattered showers and thundershowers, isolated in the north-east.

A Yellow Level 1 warning for severe thunderstorms covers the north-eastern coast and adjacent interior.

Alongside this, a Yellow Level 1 warning for damaging winds covers the extreme north-east coast and adjacent interior.

KwaZulu-Natal sees morning fog patches over the interior.

Otherwise, expect partly cloudy and cool to warm conditions, with isolated showers in the south.

A Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds and waves covers the area between Port Edward and Richards Bay and the adjacent interior.

According to SAWS, a cut-off low-pressure system continues to affect the Western and Northern Cape, bringing intermittent heavy downpours, small hail, lightning, and very rough seas reaching 4.0 to 4.5 metres south of Table Bay.

Extremely high fire danger is also active over the western parts of the Waterberg District and the Blouberg municipality in Limpopo.

It’s another busy warnings day, with six separate alerts stacked across the country at once.
