PHOTOS: Super Eagles land in Moscow for Russia friendly

The Super Eagles have arrived in Moscow ahead of Tuesday’s international friendly against Russia, with coach Eric Chelle making two changes to his squad following the withdrawal of Wilfred Ndidi and Victory Akpe.
Vince Osuji and John Otomewo have replaced the duo as Nigeria prepare for their second meeting with the Russian national team in 16 months.

The match, scheduled for 6 October, follows a challenging start to Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which has produced mixed results.
The Super Eagles opened their Group L campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo, with debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scoring after Ehsan Kari had given the visitors an early lead.
However, Nigeria suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau in their second fixture, with coach Chelle admitting that the hosts were more aggressive and intense and that his team failed to find solutions.

The Russia friendly gives the Super Eagles a chance to regroup and assess their options ahead of the next round of competitive fixtures.
Chelle names fresh faces
Chelle selected a separate 24-man squad for the encounter, featuring several players receiving their first senior invitations.

Goalkeepers Michael Atata of Ikorodu City and Samuel James, who plays in Finland, join Stanley Nwabali in the squad.
The defensive options include Kenneth Igboke, Isaac James, Benjamin Fredricks, Emmanuel Fernandez, Vince Osuji, John Otomewo, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Abdullahi Bewene.

In midfield, the withdrawn Ndidi is replaced by a group featuring Raphael Onyedika, Chibuzo Nwoko, Stephen Michael, Igor Wilfred, Ridwan Abdulrasaq, Suleiman Mubarak and Aderemi Adeoye.

The forward line comprises Kelechi Iheanacho, Moses Simon, Akor Adams, Peter Edokpolor, Abubakar Umar and Abdullahi Umar.

Nigeria and Russia last met in Moscow in June 2025, when both teams drew 1-1. Tolu Arokodare scored Nigeria’s equaliser after a Semi Ajayi own goal had given the hosts the lead.
