Fela FC dominate to win Independence Cup

Fela FC were crowned champions of the 2026 MTN Independence Cup after thrashing Future Heroes 5-1 in the final at Fela Field, Ipaja, Lagos.

Eto was instrumental for Fela FC, scoring twice as the champions dominated the final to claim the seventh edition of the grassroots competition sponsored by MTN.

Fela FC took control of the game early and went into the break with a 1-0 lead after Eto found the net to put his side ahead.

The forward completed his brace after the restart to double Fela FC’s advantage before Future Heroes pulled a goal back to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Fela FC, however, responded strongly, with Faruq restoring their two-goal lead before Gbenga added a fourth. They then completed the rout with a fifth goal to seal a comprehensive victory.

The champions had enjoyed a strong run to the final, beating Ayobo All Stars 3-1 and Kemon FC 3-0 in the group stage, while suffering a 2-0 defeat to Premier Ballers.

They went on to defeat Junior Milan 3-0 in the round of 16 and Grace FC 5-0 in the quarter-finals before overcoming HS FC 5-3 on penalties following a goalless draw in the semi-final.

Fela FC scored 24 goals and conceded seven throughout the competition.

Future Heroes also reached the final after beating Trenches Kids 3-1 and Treasure FC 5-0 in the group stage, with a goalless draw against Martel FC.

They defeated Austin Tigers 4-1 in the round of 16, Bravo Gee 2-1 in the quarter-finals and Breeze FC 1-0 in the semi-finals before their run ended against Fela FC.

Future Heroes scored 16 goals and conceded eight in the competition.

At the end of the tournament, Fela FC goalkeeper Korede was named Best Goalkeeper, while his teammate Sammy won the Most Valuable Player award.

Lion Heart FC forward Okoye Onyekachi finished as the competition’s highest goalscorer with 12 goals, while Toma FC of Agege received the Best Behaved Team award.
