At VMAs, Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic Says Band’s Music Resonates Due to Its “Authenticity”

Surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic, and Pat Smear took the stage during the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, where the band was honored with this year’s Video Vanguard Award.

After an introduction from Public Enemy’s Chuck D and an archival video featuring words from Nirvana’s late, great frontman, Kurt Cobain, Novoselic delivered an acceptance speech saying that the group’s “authenticity” is why their music still connects with fans today.

“The ideas for those videos all grew out of the vision of one of the greatest artists of all time, Kurt Cobain,” he said. “Kurt was one of one. None of us could have imagined that our band, our sound, or our aesthetic would mean so much to so many people, but ultimately the music had a life of its own.

Novoselic continued, “It charted its own course. Nirvana continues to resonate so deeply because people are still hungry for authenticity. For something real, something uncompromising. Something that tells you it’s just okay to come as you are. Kurt would’ve loved that legacy.”

The Video Vanguard Award recognizes recipients for their “outstanding contributions” and “profound impact” on music videos and popular culture. Nirvana are the first band to receive the honor since Duran Duran in 2003.

In 1992, Nirvana delivered an unforgettable performance at the VMAs. After initially teasing the opening chords to “Rape Me” — which the network had refused to let them play — the band pivoted to “Lithium.”

The trailblazing group won three consecutive Best Alternative Video awards from 1992 to 1994, for “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “In Bloom,” and “Heart-Shaped Box.” Nirvana also won Best New Artist in 1992 and Best Art Direction for “Heart-Shaped Box” in 1994.

Last year, Grohl, Novoselic, and Smear performed Nirvana songs at two events. At FireAid 2025, they were joined by St. Vincent (“Breed”), Kim Gordon (“School”), Joan Jett (“Territorial Pissings), and Violet Grohl (“All Apologies”). They also performed “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with Post Malone on lead vocals at Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary concert.
