Troops kill terrorist, rescue six in Sokoto, Zamfara

Troops of Operation Fansan Yamma have killed a suspected terrorist and rescued six members of the same family during separate operations in Sokoto and Zamfara states.

In Sokoto State, troops raided a suspected terrorist hideout in Karani village, Gudu Local Government Area, killing one terrorist and recovering an AK-47 rifle, motorcycle, military camouflage uniforms and other items.

In Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, the troops foiled a kidnapping attempt and rescued six members of the same family unharmed.

According to a statement on the operation made available on Sunday to newsmen by the spokesman of 8 Division, Lt Col Olaniyi Osoba, the troops advanced on the suspected camp and engaged the terrorists after making contact with them.

The operation was carried out by troops of Sector 2 following credible intelligence on the activities of terrorists around Karani village.

Osoba said the troops responded with “decisive firepower,” killing one of the terrorists, while others fled into the surrounding forest.

He said, “Troops of Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, acting on credible intelligence, successfully raided a suspected terrorist hideout around Karani village in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

“Upon making contact with the terrorists, the troops brought to bear decisive firepower, neutralising one terrorist, while others fled into the surrounding forest.”

The spokesman added that troops subsequently searched the camp and recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with live ammunition, an operational motorcycle, military camouflage uniforms, maintenance tools and other logistical supplies.

According to him, “A subsequent search of the camp led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle loaded with live ammunition, one operational motorcycle, military camouflage uniforms, maintenance tools and other logistical supplies.”

He further disclosed that troops launched a clearance operation in the surrounding forest after the encounter to prevent the fleeing terrorists from regrouping.

“Following the encounter, troops executed clearance operations in the surrounding forest axis to dominate the general area and deny fleeing elements freedom of action,” Osoba said.

Meanwhile, in Zamfara State, troops of 17 Brigade operating under Operation Fansan Yamma foiled a kidnapping attempt and rescued six members of the same family in Tsafe LGA.

The troops moved in after receiving reports of an ongoing attack and engaged the armed terrorists, forcing them to flee and abandon the victims.

The six family members were rescued unharmed and taken to a safe location for care before being reunited with their relatives.

The latest operations are part of ongoing efforts by Operation Fansan Yamma to dismantle terrorist networks, disrupt kidnapping activities and improve security across the North-West.
