Two men in their 70s have been admitted to hospital after separate and seemingly random attacks by a hammer-wielding man in Sydney’s north-west.

A 75-year-old man answered a knock at the door of his Eastwood home about 9pm on Tuesday, when he was struck in the face with a hammer.

A 71-year-old man was then attacked at a nearby park about 7am on Wednesday, being hit several times in the face and head, police say.

Both men were taken to Royal North Shore Hospital. The younger man was in a serious but stable condition and the older man in a stable condition.

Investigators have released CCTV footage of a person they believe can assist with inquiries. He is described as a Caucasian man aged in his 30s, about 170 centimetres tall.

The footage, taken from a childcare centre and released by police on Wednesday, shows a man in the barbecue area of neighbouring Somerville Park.

The man shown in the footage is wearing a dark tracksuit, white shoes and carrying a shopping bag with what appears to be a hammer in his hand.

Police have also appealed for dashcam footage from vehicles travelling along Blaxland Road at Eastwood between 6.30am and 7.10am on Wednesday.
