Indonesia needs strong foundations for resilient infrastructure: AHY

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) has stressed that resilient infrastructure must be built on strong foundations.
He said nation-building rests not only on physical infrastructure but also on knowledge, integrity, sound policies, and public trust.
"We need ambition, but also responsibility. We need speed, but we must not sacrifice safety. We need investment, but above all, we need infrastructure that serves the people," AHY said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday.
He underscored the importance of developing safe, high-quality, and sustainable infrastructure as a foundation for achieving the Golden Indonesia 2045 vision.
Infrastructure development, he said, should not focus solely on accelerating physical construction but must also take into account the strength of foundations and resilience against future risks.
AHY stressed that infrastructure quality largely depends on a fundamental aspect that often goes unnoticed: soil conditions and foundation strength.
He explained that even large bridges, high-rise buildings, and dams cannot meet adequate safety standards without proper foundation planning.
The role of geotechnical experts is therefore essential in ensuring that every infrastructure project is built on a sound technical foundation.
AHY said Indonesia faced various challenges on its path toward Golden Indonesia 2045, ranging from economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and climate change to technological disruption and regional disparities.
In addressing these challenges, infrastructure plays a strategic role in connecting people with jobs, farmers with markets, and communities with education and healthcare.
However, he cautioned that development progress should not be measured solely by the amount of infrastructure built.
As coordinating minister, he said the government continued to promote cross-sector policy and investment coordination across public works, transportation, housing, land affairs, spatial planning, and regional development. Such coordination is essential to ensure that infrastructure development delivers tangible and lasting benefits to the public.
According to AHY, Indonesia cannot build a resilient nation on fragile foundations. By strengthening its foundations, developing safer infrastructure, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, Indonesia can build a more resilient future toward 2045.
