PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — Two Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) personnel were injured Saturday night in an alleged accidental explosion inside their barracks at the Zamboanga City International Pier, the PCG said on Sunday.

The incident occurred at around 10:39 p.m. on Oct. 24 at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit-Southwestern Mindanao (EODU-SWM) barracks within the Port Police Compound along Corcuera Street in the Port Area.

According to Coast Guard District Southwestern Mindanao, the victims were preparing low-explosive materials for the upcoming Explosive Ordnance Reconnaissance Agent (EORA) training when the blast occurred.

Both personnel sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to Ciudad Medical Hospital for treatment. The PCG said they were conscious upon arrival and are being monitored by medical staff.

The PCG assured the public that the blast was not connected to any terrorist activity or threat, describing it as an “accidental detonation” during the routine handling and preparation of training materials within official premises.

An investigation into the exact cause of the incident is ongoing. /mcm
