Indonesia calls for ASEAN-Japan cooperation to combat cyber threats

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia called for closer cooperation between ASEAN and Japan to combat escalating cross-border cyber threats, emphasizing that regional digital security requires coordinated action as artificial intelligence evolves into a complex tactical landscape.

Speaking at the 3rd ASEAN-Japan Cybersecurity Community Alliance (AJCCA) Conference in Bangkok on Thursday (Oct. 29), Head of Indonesia’s National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) Nugroho Sulistyo Budi highlighted the rising prominence of Agentic AI, autonomous systems capable of independent planning, decision-making, and execution.

While offering profound technological potential, Budi warned that advanced AI presents both unprecedented opportunities and complex cybersecurity challenges.

"AI does not merely serve as a defensive tool (a shield); it can also become a target for attacks or be exploited as an instrument for launching attacks (a weapon)," he said in a statement.

To mitigate these emerging vulnerabilities, Indonesia urged regional partners to institutionalize robust AI governance, enforce "Security by Design" architecture, and proactively manage risks to safeguard the digital ecosystem.

Outlining a strategic framework for regional security, the BSSN head underscored three core pillars for cooperation: collaboration, capacity, and connectivity.

These pillars serve as the essential foundation for enhancing information exchange, building regional capacity, and strengthening coordination against borderless cyber threats.

"Cyber threats know no borders; resilience must be built together," Budi said.

"Because cyber threats transcend national boundaries, collaboration and a shared commitment are the keys to creating a secure, trusted and resilient digital space,” he added.

The annual AJCCA Conference convenes representatives from national cybersecurity agencies, government ministries, industry associations, academics, and practitioners from ASEAN member states and Japan to foster dialogue and cooperation.

As part of its initiatives, the alliance presents the prestigious ACRA Award to recognize exceptional contributions to regional cybersecurity.

During this year's conference, Budi was honored with the ACRA Award in the Outstanding Leadership category in recognition of his dedication to driving innovative initiatives and strengthening cybersecurity ecosystems at both national and regional levels.
