EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants middle linebacker Tremaine Edmunds is out for the season with a torn chest muscle, a source told ESPN.

Edmunds signed a three-year, $36 million deal with the Giants this offseason. He led the team with 50 tackles and was tied for the team lead with two sacks through six games this season.

New York will also be without outside linebacker Chauncey Golston for the remainder of the season, sources told ESPN. Golston was placed on injured reserve earlier this month with a neck injury.

Edmunds, 28, was hurt on one of the final plays of Sunday's 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints. They were trying to determine this week if it was something Edmunds could manage. He wanted to play through the injury, but it was determined that would not be possible.

The veteran linebacker was one of the leaders of the Giants defense. He was on the team's leadership counsel and wore the green dot to make the calls on defense.

Veteran Micah McFadden will take his place in the middle of the defense and is expected to wear the green dot and communicate directly with defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. The Giants have maintained since the summer that they have three starting middle linebackers on the roster with Edmunds, Arvell Reese and McFadden.

"I think I said early on we have three starters. So, when and if that happens, Micah is ready [to start]," coach John Harbaugh said earlier Friday. "He's a starter, and he'll play really well. He'll be excited for his opportunity."

McFadden has started 36 games in his career. He will be in the middle of the defense on Sunday against the Houston Texans.

The Giants (3-2-1) also expect to have cornerback Paulson Adebo return from a knee injury. He was on injured reserve but had his window to return opened earlier this week.

Starting offensive tackles Andrew Thomas (groin) and Jermaine Eluemunor (calf) should be available despite being listed as questionable for the contest. Harbaugh said Friday they "should have a good chance" to play.
