Woman arrested on suspicion of cable theft

DUNGUN: Police arrested an 18-year-old woman suspected of being involved in the theft of a Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) cable in Kampung Delong, Jalan Loji Air Paya Kemudi, early this morning.

District police chief superintendent Nik Ab Halim Nik Mat said the teenager was arrested at 3am today after the police received a report about the loss of a 150mm TNB cable, approximately 1,000m long, estimated to be worth RM8,000.

He said that acting on the report, a team of officers from the Dungun district police headquarters rushed to the location, and the suspect, upon noticing the police presence, fled and left behind the cable that had been cut into shorter pieces.

As a result of the police follow-up action, a woman was arrested while in a grey Proton Satria Neo car.

"In addition, the police also seized a vehicle, several TNB cable sections and rods, a cable cutter, and a bag containing tools believed to be related to the case," he said in a statement today.

Nik Ab Halim said the initial investigation found that the cables were believed to have been cut using cutting tools before the insulation was removed to obtain the copper wire.

It is said that the detained woman was brought to the Dungun Court today and remanded for four days until Sept 27 to assist in the investigation.

"The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft," he said.

He said the police will intensify preventive measures and enforcement against cable theft and utility facilities that harm companies and undermine community well-being.
