Three state firms align to drive Indonesia's e-motorcycle program

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is forging ahead with efforts to develop an enabling ecosystem for electric vehicles, as three state-owned enterprises have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance the National Electric Motorcycle (Molinas) program.

Through its subsidiary Pertamina Patra Niaga, state oil and gas company Pertamina signed the MoU with electricity firm PLN and defense and technology company Len Industri in Jakarta on Tuesday (Oct. 27), in the presence of senior officials from Indonesia's sovereign wealth fund Danantara.

The cooperation agreement lays the groundwork for the three state-run companies to develop electric vehicle battery charging and swapping infrastructure, according to a statement received on Friday.

Patra Niaga Retail Marketing Director Eko Ricky described the MoU signing as a strategic step to strengthen the company's contribution to the national energy transition through support for the Molinas program.

He added that advancing Molinas is also intended to help Indonesia achieve its net-zero emissions target by 2060 or earlier.

"Through this collaboration, we aim to ensure the transition to electric vehicles goes beyond merely providing the vehicles themselves. Equally important is building a reliable energy ecosystem that is accessible across various regions," Ricky stated.

He elaborated on Patra Niaga's role in the Molinas program, highlighting plans to expand downstream infrastructure by integrating its fuel stations and strategic retail outlets with battery charging and swapping facilities.

Ricky said the company had converted 837 fuel stations into "green energy stations" across Indonesia, with 112 EV charging points and 122 battery-swapping facilities available to support electric vehicles, including motorcycles.

"This initiative reflects our readiness to build a reliable and accessible ecosystem for future energy," he added, noting that the three companies share a commitment to supporting the government's target of reducing emissions from transportation.

Launched by President Prabowo Subianto last August, Molinas was designed to help Indonesia establish a stronger position in the electric motorcycle supply chain.

The program envisions an ecosystem supported by domestic capabilities in component manufacturing, vehicle assembly, battery production, and after-sales services.
