Albay suspends in-person classes Sept. 29-30 over transport strike

MANILA, Philippines — Face-to-face classes were suspended in Albay province for Tuesday, Sept. 29, and Wednesday, Sept. 30, due to a transport strike by groups protesting soaring fuel prices.

In an advisory issued on Sunday, Albay Gov. Noel Rosal said classes at all levels in both private and public schools in the province would shift to alternative learning modalities.

“To ensure continuity of services, government and private offices are advised to ferry their employees using their respective office vehicles,” he said in the advisory.

He also advised local government units to mobilize available resources to provide “free rides” for stranded commuters in their respective localities during the strike.

Transport group Manibela earlier announced that it would stage a transport strike from Sept. 28 to 30.

Meanwhile, transport group Piston will hold its strike from Sept. 29 to 30.

Aside from protesting fuel price hikes, the groups earlier said the transport strike also aims to call on the government to abolish the value-added tax and excise tax on fuel products, roll back fuel prices, and repeal the Oil Deregulation Law that allows oil companies to set fuel prices with little government control. /mcm
