Decades Of Service, A Week of Gratitude: Raila Odinga’s First Anniversary Begins
A three-day program marking the first anniversary of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s death officially commenced today, Tuesday, October 13, 2026, the Raila Odinga Memorial Anniversary Committee announced.
Running through October 15, the commemorations bring together elders, youth, religious leaders, family, and supporters to celebrate the veteran politician’s life and legacy. The itinerary includes an intergenerational dialogue in Kisumu, an international candle-lighting ceremony at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, and a primary memorial gathering at the Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo on Thursday.
According to a statement released on Monday by committee chairman Prof. Adams Oloo, the activities are structured to honor Odinga’s decades of public service and promote reflection on his democratic ideals.
“This is not a week of mourning alone. It is a week of gratitude,” Oloo stated, emphasizing that the anniversary seeks to celebrate Odinga’s national contributions.
Opening Conclave and Community Initiatives
The commemorations opened on Tuesday at Ofafa Memorial Hall in Kisumu, featuring an intergenerational conclave attended by the Luo Council of Elders, youth groups, women’s organizations, and religious leaders.
The forum centers on Odinga’s historical calls for intergenerational dialogue to address economic, political, and social issues, while reviewing national progress on peace, tolerance, and civic engagement following his passing.
As part of the opening day’s events, local youth will present artistic renditions, musical performances, and poetry reflecting on Odinga’s political career. A public blood donation drive is also taking place alongside the discussions to honor his dedication to public welfare.
