SASSA Old-Age Grant increases: Will pain turn to GAIN in 2027?

Translate

It appears SASSA Old-Age Grant increases will not go ahead in October 2026. With less than 24 hours to go to the next disbursement date – Friday 2 October 2026 – the agency is yet to confirm any changes to the grant. Disappointingly so, because pensioners have watched the cost of living outpace their miserly R80 increase from April all year ..

SASSA OLD-AGE GRANT INCREASES

However, could 2026 pain turn to 2027 gain for SASSA Old-Age Grant increases? The South African ran through the Treasury’s numbers recently and found something encouraging. If the data is to be believed, and agency sticks to its plan, next year’s increases could be some of the biggest yet.

Each year, the Minister of Finance confirms grant increases as part of his annual Budget Speech in February. On the surface, the size of these increases can look arbitrary from one year to the next. But the National Treasury plans its social-welfare budget years ahead. And while the numbers do get revised as new information comes to light, the underlying figures are calculated well in advance.

Here’s Treasury’s own published trajectory for SASSA Old-Age Grant increases, plus beneficiary numbers:

  • 2025: R115.7-billion budget, 4.19-million beneficiaries.
  • 2026: R121.8-billion budget, 4.26-million beneficiaries.
  • 2027: R129.6-billion budget, 4.33-million beneficiaries.

The pattern that matters here is the gap between how fast the budget grows and how fast the beneficiary count grows. In 2026, the budget grew by roughly 5.14%, while beneficiary numbers grew by 1.60%. That’s a gap of 3.54 percentage points. For 2027, Treasury’s own figures point to budget growth of 6.20% against beneficiary growth of just 1.62%, a considerably wider gap of 4.58 percentage points.

WHAT COULD THIS MEAN FOR SASSA OLD-AGE GRANT INCREASES IN 2027?

What this means is the gap that funds an actual per-person increase is larger than this year’s. Therefore, the maths suggests pensioners should be in line for a bigger increase than the one received in 2026. As such, extrapolating the percentages, pensioners could be looking at an increase of R100, much better than 2026’s miserly R80.

This would result in SASSA Old-Age Grant increases to R2 500 (60 to 74) and R2 520 (over 75), respectively. Of course, it is worth being very clear that none of this is confirmed. The South African Social Security Agency and National Treasury Government have five months before the next Budget Speech to revise their plans. And projections in the current economy are ever changing.

But what do you think? How much would you like to see SASSA Old-Age Grant increases be in 2027? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below …
