PlayStation 5 owners have another reason to revisit their game libraries this October as not one, but two familiar post-apocalyptic shooters are getting free next-gen upgrades, giving players a chance to return to the underground tunnels of Moscow with improved visuals and performance without spending another penny.

Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux received their native PS5 versions on October 29, so players who already own either PS4 edition are eligible for a free upgrade. There’s no need to purchase the games again or have an active PlayStation Plus subscription to access the new versions on current-gen PlayStation consoles, including PS5 Pro. Not just PlayStation: the Metro Redux Next-Gen Update pack also brings improvements to the games’ Xbox Series X|S and PC versions.

The biggest features of the Metro Redux Next-Gen Update are, of course, related to resolution and performance. PS5 players can experience Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux in true 4K at 60 FPS or opt for upscaled 4K at 120 FPS, provided their display supports the required refresh rate.

The update also improves several visual elements across both titles. These include higher-quality lighting, shadows, particle effects, textures, animations, and sound. Geometry details have also received improvements, while screen-space global illumination adds to the visual changes.

DualSense support is another welcome addition. The PS5 versions feature adaptive trigger support for the controllers, giving players a more tactile experience when using weapons or playing through the games. PS5 Pro owners also get access to PSSR support, alongside the other visual and performance improvements.

Note that this isn’t a complete remake or remaster of either game. The developer has described the release as a quality-of-life upgrade designed to improve the existing Redux editions for modern hardware.

How To Claim The Free Metro Redux PS5 Upgrades

Players who already own Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux on PS4 should be eligible for their respective PS5 upgrades without an additional purchase. The publisher has clarified that most existing owners qualify, although certain versions may not be compatible.

It’s also worth noting that players don’t need to own both games to qualify for a download. Owning either title makes them eligible for its corresponding upgrade. Those who have never purchased either game will still need to buy it to access the updated version.

Metro 2039 Could Give Players Another Reason To Revisit The Series

The timing of the Metro Redux Next-Gen Update is perfect, considering the next mainline entry, Metro 2039, is scheduled to arrive on February 4, 2027.

With a little over three months separating the two releases, the upgraded versions offer newcomers an opportunity to experience the earlier chapters before the next installment arrives. Long-time fans can also revisit Artyom’s journey with improved performance on current-generation hardware.

If you don’t own Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux right now and aren’t in a hurry to try out the shooter survival horror franchise, you could wait for Metro 2039 to drop early next year. For PlayStation 5 owners who already have these games sitting in their libraries, however, you wouldn’t want to miss out on a free update and a chance to revisit both experiences, now empowered with modern visuals and interactions.
