55-year old woman dies after van sideswipes motorcycle in Antipolo City

A 55-year-old woman in Antipolo City died after a van sideswiped a motorcycle with three passengers.

In a 24 Oras report from EJ Gomez on Wednesday, CCTV footage showed how a motorcycle swerved too close to a van on a curved portion of Marcos Highway in Barangay San Luis on Tuesday.

The resulting contact caused the motorcycle and its passengers to fall on the road.

The victim—who was the motorcycle driver’s wife—was run over by the utility van. The van’s driver stopped and attended to the victims.

The third passenger was a two-year-old child who the couple treated as their own.

Barangay officials said the area was prone to accidents.

The 60-year-old motorcycle driver said that he swerved to avoid something on the road.

“Basa po yung kalsada, kasi pababa po iyon. Iniwasan ko lang yung kabilang… parang lumipat lang ako sa kanilang lane. Siya po yung nasa likuran ko. Nagulat nalang ako bigla tapos bigla nalang kami bumagsak,” the motorcycle driver said.

(The road was wet, because it was going down. I tried to avoid the other… I tried to switch to the other lane. He was behind me. I was surprised then we just fell suddenly.)

The motorcycle driver said he just saw his wife laying down and when he turned, he saw the child. It seemed like his wife tried to save the child, the motorcycle driver said.

Barangay San Luis rescuer Eldrich John Riolo said when they checked on the victim, she was already unconscious and unresponsive. They brought her to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The driver sustained injuries to the leg, while the child sustained minor injuries and scratches.

“Yung asawa po, naka-helmet, tapos yung babae po, may helmet, pero nasa siko, hindi po niya sinuot, tapos yung bata po, nasa right side niya,” Riolo said.

(The husband was wearing a helmet, then the woman had a helmet, but it was on her elbow, she was not wearing it, then the child was on her right side.)

Police detained the 60-year-old van driver, but eventually released him after the two sides reached an arrangement. —Jean Mangaluz/RF, GMA News
