Federal judge limits search of Ilhan Omar's documents due to constitutional protections - report

The Trump administration's recent search of Democratic US Representative Ilhan Omar's home and documents was limited by the warrant approved by a federal judge, CNN reported on Wednesday.

According to CNN, Judge Matthew Sharbaugh of the DC District Court limited the Justice Department's access to Omar's documents because, as a member of Congress, she has certain Constitutional protections, people familiar with the investigation said.

Sharbaugh reportedly told prosecutors ahead of the search that they would need to set up a process to screen Omar's records in order to protect her legislative work from the investigators.

The probe into Omar is centered on her immigration from Somalia as a child, which includes allegations that she repeated false statements made back then while filling out recent paperwork, sources told CNN.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigators searched Omar's home in Washington on Monday morning.

Ilhan Omar's relatives receive subpoenas over immigration probe

On Friday, only a few days earlier, CBS reported, several of Omar's relatives received grand jury subpoenas as part of the investigation.

Two sources also told CBS that Omar's personal cell phone had been taken by Homeland Security Investigations during the search.

Omar claimed in a social media post that the US government is being weaponized to target a political enemy of the US president.

"For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns," Omar said. "This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced."

US President Donald Trump denied involvement in the investigation when asked about Omar on Monday.

“I understand they’re looking at her very carefully,” he said, calling her “totally crooked” and “a terrible person,” he said.

“That’s really up to the DOJ - I have nothing to do with it.”
