Boele's push to define 'affordable housing'

Independent MP Nicolette Boele will today introduce a private member's bill to parliament to establish a nationally consistent definition of "affordable housing".
Under the proposal, the definition would be tied to household incomes and attached to Commonwealth housing programs and funding agreements.
Boele says her push has attracted support from organisations including the Property Council of Australia, Australian Community Housing, and Planning Institute of Australia.
"We have to have all of the pieces of a system that give the confidence and the integrity for the community, so that we know what we're doing with our efforts with taxpayers' money towards delivering affordable homes actually does deliver for us, and for the people who really need those homes."
The Bradfield MP says the definition could help stamp out what she labels "an unregulated cowboy industry".
"Just listening to people in my electorate who see that apartments are advertised for $1,100 a week and they can be counted as affordable housing, because there is nothing in the system that says otherwise."

One Nation will today unveil plans to cut Australia's temporary migration program by targeting international students and families of skilled migrants.
Under the plan, net overseas migration would temporarily dip into the negatives over three years, down by more than 750,000, before settling at an annual target of 130,000.
Temporary skilled worker visas will remain demand-driven with no new cap on primary worker visas. However, One Nation wants to remove the around 70,000 secondary visas granted to family members.
The party says it will tighten eligibility for student graduate visas. International student visas will be capped at 100,000 a year. One Nation wants a new visa for post-grads to be established to attract "high-value" science, engineering and medical research students.
Meanwhile, visa overstayers will be given three months to leave. If they don't do so voluntarily, they will face enforcement and a lifetime ban on returning to Australia.
